Change the field type of the subitem column?

I’d like to change the field type of the subitem column to a dropdown. Is that possible?

Not having seen a way to do that, I’ve created another column as a dropdown, and then I tried to create an automation to change the value of the subitem column to be assigned the value of my new column. But I also could not find a way to do that.

As a 3rd option, I’d like to autofill the subitem column with an auto-incrementing integer. Is that possible?

If you click on the three dots at the top of that subitem column, you should have an option to ‘Change Column Type’. This example shows that with a dropdown column being one that you can choose from.

@dmccarthy22710 , looking at your reply once more, I see that you are showing the popups for the text column. I’m asking about the “Subitem” column specifically (the left-most column in your screenshot). This is the column I want to change.

There are no ellipses in the SubItem column when I hover over it. Below is what I see. Maybe this is because we are on the free version of monday.com?

Got it, so you can’t change the type of column for the ‘first’ column, no matter which plan you’re on.

In regards to your automations, you could likely find a way to do something similar to what you’re looking for depending which plan/product you have. Do you have access to workflows/automations? Which product (CRM/Work Management, etc) and level (Pro/Enterprise) do you have?

Thanks for the follow-up. We’re using Work Management. I do have access to automations. We are a non-profit on a free plan.

Do you always have/need the same number of subitems for each item or does it vary? ie you could create an automation to create the subitems numbered 1-10 (or whatever #). Would be a bit of a set up the first time, but would keep you from having to manually do it later.

Thank you for your continued attention to this. The number of subitems will vary.
