Connecting subitem to parent item using workflow

Hello,

I am attempting to automate a mirror connection, which I know can be difficult. We have a parent item with data, then subitems with data which are auto-populated upon creation of the parent item. To reduce data duplication, the number of participants is entered once onto the parent item, then mirrored into all of the parent’s subitems via linking the parent item to the subitem.

From what I can see while checking the code in the subitems, I cannot choose the parent item’s “Participants” column to pull the number. The “Participants Mirror” column in subitems (reflecting the same data) can be used in the code.

From my foray into workflows, I’m unable to figure out how to automate the process of connecting the parent item to the subitems. Has anyone been able to do this natively? I’m open to alternative apps, but would love to build a workflow if possible. I’m still new to creating intense workflows, so I’m hopeful I’ve just missed a step or am not seeing the best option to connect things all together.

Thank you!

Hi @teslafox

You can do this natively using workflows.

Set up a workflow that triggers when a subitem is created, then add a Connect Boards block that automatically connects the parent item in the Connect Boards column at the subitem level.

Once configured, any new subitem created will automatically have its parent connected in that column, and the Mirror column will pull in the parent’s values (such as Participants) automatically.

I’ve attached a screenshot of the setup for reference.

Hope this helps!

Hi @teslafox ,

Could you please clarify that what is the type of column for “participants” column of parent item?
