Create New Items via Form: Set default in Work Management

Description

Allow the “+New Item Button” default action to be changed to “Create Item via FORM” (this is something you can do on CRM but not Work Management).

After moving from CRM to Work Management, we noticed the “Create Items via Forms” is no longer available. This feature was essential for us to guide item creation by setting required fields, hiding unnecessary columns, and ensuring key intake data is captured upfront. Without it, items can be created with missing information, which disrupts our automations and, even more critical, our workflows that are set with specific triggers and conditions.

While we can create a Form View and enable “allow item creation with form,” the form is only accessible via a dropdown beside the New button, and we cannot change the default button action. This extra step will realistically lead to user error, with many items bypassing the form and resulting in inconsistent data. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

“Create Item via Card” helps prompt for details but still doesn’t allow required fields or layout control. We’d strongly value the ability to restore or add create via Form View as the default.

What are you trying to achieve

We want to ensure that new items are created with complete, standardized intake data by guiding users through a required form view at the point of creation. This helps reduce user error, maintain data quality, and reliably trigger our automations and workflows. Only the Form View allows us to require “Connected Board Columns” to be set as required, we which leverage extensively.

Allow the “+New Item Button” default action to be changed to “Create Item via FORM” (this is something you can do on CRM but not Work Management). Alternatively, allow the Item Card view that can be used to be customizable with required items AND hidden items.

I should also add that a paid app really shouldn’t be recommended considering this feature is already an option on the CRM. There you can find under board settings the option to “Enable Item Creation via Form”. However, in Work Management you only can use “Item Card for Creation”, which you cannot edit. You can almost get a item via form creation by enabling the setting under the form view, it just is not the default action (as mentioned above). I’m lost as to why, even where the settings are located, is not mirrored on each product. It feels disjointed.

Finally, for users that have both CRM and Work Management, not being able to use the same layout styles to trigger item creation really feels like a mistake. The jarring difference visually and process wise really does break the flow that Monday should be able to provide.

Another bump to this because there is an “acting like a bug” issue that if you set a required people column, you can no longer add a form view to your board. These two items unnecessarily interact and break standard usage. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

It is critical that people have a smooth way to manage the submission of data on their boards. Also, their should be customization available to that to ensure unique workflows can be accommodated. We even lost the conditional status feature, which we were not informed about, and it should 100% NOT be locked to the CRM product. It is a key project management tool.
