Currently, creating an item, but not assigning yourself to a field (automated or otherwise) marks the creator as a subscriber, but does not give them notifications when there are updates to the item. Once assigned to any field, notifications are received, but not before. The creator/initial subscriber should be able to receive notifications without further input.
