I have hand selected the correct ‘supplier’ in the connected column on the ‘contacts’ board (eg the ‘monkey’ example, above’) but am now wanting to automate the completion of the ‘contact’ column on the ‘supplier’ board.
I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do it.
I have tried ‘finding matching item’ but it doesn’t look like a match is found if the match in question involves a match in a connected column.
I swear I have done this before but just can’t figure it out!

Yes, but I had already created the column…from what I could gather there is no easy way to do what I needed to do BUT what I did to get around it was to create a new 2-way column, then, on the board with the already existing linked column, I ran an automation to update the new 2-way column, with information from the existing linked column. I am pleased to report this worked a treat - updated all mirror columns too. I then just deleted the original existing column in favour of my new, beautiful 2-ways.
I had a similar workflow I was trying to figure out.
If I am understanding this right though, you should have been able to do this with workflows using the Find Matching Item, BUT you then have to use the Get Item Data straight after otherwise you can’t do anything with it.
I think the problem was, Matt, that the ‘matching item’ would have been a connected column, so the system didn’t find its match…but nonetheless, I found a way around it!
Workflows would be a great solution, but that’s an Enterprise-only feature and I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume people have the most expensive subscription tier.
Glad you figured it out, Angela! I’ve run up against that same obstacle before, and I was very irritated to discover that a one-way Connect Boards column cannot subsequently be changed to a two-way one. If you miss that checkbox when creating the column, you’re just S.O.L.—so you have to find creative ways to migrate your original column’s values into the new, separate bidirectional column like you did. I’d suggest creating a feature request for this (the ability to change Connect Boards columns from one-way to two-way after they’ve been created)! I couldn’t find an existing one, though I have previously given this feedback via the Support team, and I’m sure we’re not the only ones who have been stymied by this!
