I’m trying to figure out how I can achieve an automation with subitems. It seems the automation functionality of Monday is relatively limited when it comes to subitems.
What I want to do is fairly simple (or so I thought).
Label changes in a Dropdown column (i.e. “column changes”) on the subitem
Based on the label that’s selected (i.e. “column’s value) another column (long_text) on the subitem is updated with a particular string (with text specific to the select label).
I was hoping to achieve this within Monday automations, and not rely on Make (which we use for many other automations), as it needs to be highly responsive. Meaning, the long description column should change relatively quickly after the label is selected/changed.
I can do the first part using Monday automation trigger options, with something like this:
But then I see no option to change the text in or value of a text column. That’s where I need a way forward.
I considered using something like the General Caster app, but it doesn’t handle subitems. I also looked into the Subitem Automations app, but going through its documentation I see it doesn’t appear to have a way to change the value of a long text column.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to achieve this.
What else, if anything, do you need to be able to do with the updated content in that text field? (I’m thinking I might have a workaround for you involving a Formula column… but those can’t be used in automations.)
You might want to try the Copy Paster Master app. It has a built-in automation that can pull data from a dropdown column and automatically insert it into a long text column.
you could try the workflows instead of automations. There are some more options (like multiple choices if a do a if not do b kind a style), although I need to say some more triggers may be nice. But “changing status” is definitely an available trigger
