New Gantt Chart

Hi @Matilda, @Mat, @horton, @bpeddie, & @ML_NUW - Melissa here from the support team! Thank you for all of these notes! Our team is working on the ability to view and manage dependencies in the Timeline View. They are aiming for Q2 for this, so stay tuned! As far as linking multiple dependencies, we don’t have anything on the road map for this update currently. Happy to share this request as I understand this is important for several of your teams!

+100 for dependencies being viewable on the timeline!
+100 for multiple dependencies!

This NEEDS to happen ASAP. :open_mouth:

Hi

I left Monday.com for smartsheet a year or so back because of the lack of Gantt functionality and after many many discussions with the team a lack of a timeline to get one implemented.

I was really happy to see an email pop up in my inbox that there was now a Gantt view so had another look but it still isn’t a traditional Gantt - which is quite an industry standard view.

grouping is less helpful by the types of columns you can group by and it is not possible to get the key information (task name, date range etc) tabulated alongside the graphical representation.

Therefore you have to rely on the task name being short enough to fit in the tasks bar in the chart - for example on the initial post in this string the example given of the 34 or so blue items 6 are of any value where you can read the task name.

And there is no simple way of finding the task you are wanting to look for without either knowing which one it is in the first place or having to scroll across the timeline looking and hovering over each item.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you do a simple standard implementation that reflects the 90% of all Gantt controls and applications out there on the market - i want to come back but just can’t until there is a standard Gantt implementation.

p.s. PLEEAAASSSSEEEE

I would like to add my support for a fully featured Gantt chart view (as it is a standard project management format) and add to the Gantt chart format feature requests.

  • Please show the connected dependent tasks in the timeline view
  • Please allow a task to be dependent upon more than one task (if either dependency slips out, the dependent task should slip out regardless of the status of the other dependency)
  • Please make it easy to print to PDF

Like the poster above, I do not want to have to use a second PM tool just to get a real Gantt chart.

THANK YOU

Agreed 100% that we need to be able to link multiple dependencies, AND maybe it can be done via sub tasks to some degree? List multiple dependencies as sub tasks on a parent task that is linked to the other parent task? Not perfect, but maybe a way to make it work until we can truly link multiple dependencies?

I would also like to see a Gantt chart with the basic functionality of a Gantt chart implemented. Specifically like others have asked for, I would like to see

  • The connected dependent tasks in the timeline view as a line
  • Functionality to allow tasks to be dependent upon more than one task

Also what is the automation I should use to bring dates earlier? Dependencies work fine if the date slips to be late, i.e. Task 1 is now going to be late the automation makes Task 2, which is dependent on task one start later. However, if corrective action is taken and it is now possible to complete task 1 earlier, the automation does not move dependent task (task 2) to start earlier

Hi,
I’d like to add my support to the gentle pressure  on monday.com to upgrade the timeline/gantt/dependencies functionality on par with industry standards for project management. Examples:

  • I’d like to see all timeline functionality able to utilise timeline both start and end dates independently (at the moment only timeline end date interacts with most functions).

  • I’d like to be able to set multiple precedent items to a dependent item as well as set an item to be precedent to multiple dependent items.

  • I’d like to see dependency relationships between items shown in the timeline view, to help easily track changes cascading thru the schedule.

  • I’d like to have the ability to highlight the critical path.

  • I believe the current timeline view lacks a print or export to PDF feature. I’ve been having to export to EXCEL to get something suitable to print or even just review a schedule with more than 10 lines. Something that looks like the overview maybe, where lines are more condensed so it’s possible to see a lot more in the screen.
I hope it’s all coming very soon.

I would like to see the functionality mentioned by @Stu and @amyls implemented. I am looking to roll this out at a new company (instead of Asana) and would very much like to see this sort of functionality added since it is standard in Asana. Part of my pitch is that you all are working to really improve this product constantly so even if it has gaps it doesn’t really matter. Already a great product but these features would be a HUGE improvement.

Any update on this feature by any chance?

In addition to dependency relationships on the Gantt, I would like to be able to control the type of dependency. Also an industry standard for project management
• Finish to Start
• Start to Start
• Finish to Finish
• Start to Finish

This was a deal breaker for me! While I was trialing the software, I noticed that if one of the lead task slips and most of the others are dependent on the previous task finishing then the other tasks moved back by the slipped time. Great. However if I could address the slipped time and move the lead task back to the original position or close to it, I needed to manually move all the later dependent tasks forward. How crazy is that? I often need to play around with start and end dates of tasks during the project so I need the movement of later dependent tasks to move in accordance. If you then also have automations sending notifications or emails out to the owners of the the task effected this can get very confusing. There should be a way to have an “experiment” mode so you can play around and when you’re happy only then let the automations and notifications do their stuff. I could only use one dependency also (begin Dec 2020) 1. Move the dependent task in accordance to the previous one, or, 2. the dependent task can not start earlier than the previous one. Both were not possible which is rediculous. I also missed a lag function ie, dependent task can start 3 days later than previous one. However often the 3 day lag in construction can be calendar days so that could include weekends. If a 3 day lag starts on Thursday, then normally work could start on the following Monday. But Monday would move the task to start on Wednesday because the weekend didn’t count. I haven’t so far opted in to use Monday because of this…

Multiple dependencies  Now you are talking. I trialed the software and this was a deal breaker for me. Further down I wrote a long reply concerning that point among other things.

I am just evaluating cloud-based project management tools as an enhancement/replacement for JIRA and I’m afraid that the lack of visible lines on the gantt chart is a deal breaker for me. You seem to be the only platform that don’t do this, when one of the key issues our developers complain about is not having a clear view of relationships and dependencies between tasks.
It’s a shame as everything else looks really good, but until you show lines on your chart, I will be going elsewhere.
Any idea when this might become available ?

Im confused on what the gantt chart should look like in current production version of monday.com. I was reading this help article on Advanced Project Management, and the gantt chart in the middle of the article looks nothing like the one in my account. There are no dependency lines and milestones are not represented by a diamond. Will the version in the support article be available to users soon?

Yes I noticed the lines on the Gantt chart too in the article, but didn’t seen them in my Gantt view.

Yep, confused me too.

Hope we get the one in the article soon. The one in the account is unusable without those lines.

Stu,

Did you ever figure this out? I am wondering the same thing. This too might be a deal breaker for me.

@carl3amu Have you had a look at the new Gantt chart released by Monday.com last month?

I’ve been looking how am i going to reflect the total days count in Gantt chart. Anyone has an idea?

I couldn’t even find out how to set up the lag days on Monday…
