Template Docs and Connected Boards

Hello!

I’ve designed a template for our staff to use that has two views: a main table, and a Doc view which ideally connects the main table to the doc layout in different ways as needed. It seemed to be okay, except that as we trial it, the board/doc spawned from the template is only connected to the original template table, NOT to the new table created by using the template. This means that the Doc view is not updating with the table information. Hope that makes sense - how can I get a templated Doc that automatically also connects to a new relevant table in the Main Table view?

Thanks,
Rose

Hi! Let’s try one of these work arounds.

  1. Re-link the Doc Manually
  • After creating a new board from the template:
    • Open the Doc view → Edit the connected blocks or tables → Switch the source to the new Main Table.
  • This is the only way to refresh the data for now.
  1. Use Dashboard + Doc Integration
  • If you create a dashboard with a Doc widget instead of a native Doc view:
    • Duplicating the dashboard as a template allows for re-selecting data sources much faster.
  • Not fully automatic, but easier to update.
  1. Use Automations + App Workarounds
  • Use Make.com / Zapier / API to duplicate a board and auto-create a new Doc with the correct linked board.
  • This is advanced but ensures every new board has a properly linked Doc.

Feature Request Suggestion

Right now, fully automated linking of Docs to new boards isn’t supported.

  • I recommend submitting a feature request via Monday’s community or support:
    • “Allow Docs in board templates to dynamically link to the newly created board rather than the original template source.”
