It would be great if the validation and required column feature extended to Connect columns
What are you trying to achieve
I often use Connect columns in place of drop down or status columns since it allows for multiple boards to work together.
There is a drop down column that has different items. If two of the items are selected, the user is currently prompted to leave a note in a Comments column. We would like to swap the drop down out for a Connect column for better organization and multi-board visibility, but then we lose the feature of when certain items are selected, the user has to add a comment.
At the moment, validation and required logic don’t extend to Connect columns the way they do with Status or Dropdown columns, so you’re right that you lose that conditional “leave a comment if X is selected” behavior when you switch.
A couple of possible workarounds you might explore:
• Use an automation such as “When Connect column changes and contains X, notify owner to add a comment”
• Add a Status helper column that mirrors the connected item type and drive the validation from that
• Use a form (if applicable) where conditional logic can enforce required fields before submission
It’s definitely a gap if you’re trying to fully replace structured columns with Connect columns, especially in more relational setups. I can see this being useful for teams building more advanced multi-board systems.
