How to preserve custom widget settings in a template for use

I am having trouble getting my custom widget preferences in my template to transfer over to the used board. Is this a bug or perhaps I am doing something wrong. Any ideas out there on how to preserve the custom colors, or sort order of a widget from a template? thanks
