Let’s be honest — 99% of monday.com users are not going to ditch the native table or kanban view for a custom app view that just replicates what monday already does. And that’s totally fair.
But as developers, we’re currently limited to building “embedded apps” that live inside items or in standalone views. That’s a huge missed opportunity.
Just look at what is already technically possible
-
Custom column icons – So users immediately understand a column is powered by an app.
-
Full custom columns – Think of “Emails & Activities” style columns that developers can create and control.
- Item-level customization – Let us enhance the native board or kanban views with icons, buttons, or app-powered context—not just build whole new views.
- App-triggered popups – Perfect for app onboarding flows and similar features to help users do their work from their preferred view without compromising.
If monday wants to become a truly extensible platform, this is the way. Right now, the app framework is too restrictive to deliver real value to users — and that’s a shame, because the potential is massive.
Not to take away from what’s currently possible - I absolutely love monday.com and the apps marketplace - but I believe that there’s much more untapped potential here.
Let’s build with the monday UI, not around it.
