Add dependency between subtasks and tasks (anywhere else in the plan)

Basic project plan requirement - Add dependency between a subtask anywhere in the plan to a task anywhere in the plan. Monday.com does not allow this today, so what are the alternatives to create a project plan with proper dependencies in Monday?

Currently, Monday.com doesn’t allow direct dependencies between subtasks and tasks across different parts of the plan. However, here are a few alternatives to work around this limitation:

  1. Mirror Columns: You can use the Mirror Column feature to link specific subtask data to related tasks, providing some level of connection between them.
  2. Dependency Columns: While limited to tasks, you can still create dependencies using the dependency column for tasks and use subtasks as reference points manually.
  3. Custom Automations: Set up automations to trigger actions between tasks and subtasks based on their statuses or dates to simulate dependencies.
  4. Link Subtasks to Tasks via Tags: Use tags or labels to connect subtasks to related tasks, even if the dependencies aren’t built-in.

For more complex project plans, consider using an external project management tool that integrates with Monday.com or handle dependencies in a visual roadmap tool alongside Monday.

Thanks @jhonmkl for the options but none of it would behave as a typical dependency would. Also I don’t understand why this project management tool makes the users use 100s of workarounds and marketplace apps (which are not free either) for the basic functionality that exists in tools developed as old as 10-15 years ago.

Agreed! I have had to go back to Asana for true project management functionality - Monday just doesn’t provide the right functionality

@jhonmkl - For item 3, automations, ive looked through the sub item automation list and cant see a way to get this to work, i.e. when you create a new sub item, set the start date to match the start date of the parent item.

Can you expand on your answer please?

Thanks.

If you are using “Timeline” column type then Monday automations (recipes) do not support that column
Wish the automations supported extracting the timeline-start and timeline-end dates.
