I have created a Summary column that shows the full timeline of an item based on its subtask dates. However, when I go to set the dependencies of my parent items, that Subitems Timeline Summary column is not an option, so I am unable to make my item dependencies work correctly.
Since it’s also not possible to make subtasks dependent on a parent task, it seems impossible to create a timeline and gantt that can be automated by updating the first item in a sequence. All items must be individually updated. This is very time-consuming.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to address this?
That is because the parent item column created when you select “Show summary in parent” is a mirror column that might look like a timeline but still is a mirror. The app Rollup Subitems bypasses this by writing the subitem’s timeline summary into a real parent item timeline column.
We developed an app called subitem automations that provides robust automation capabilities to subitems. Here’s an example of how it can be used to set dependencies between subitems and their parent item.
Adjusting subitems based on changes in their parent item →
There a bunch more options, some of them are more robust for advanced project management - Like ensuring subitems don’t start after/before their parent item or the other way around etc.
