Annoyed that date column forces calendar picker and doesn't support text entry

Is anyone else annoyed that you can’t enter a textual date mm/dd/yy (or dd/mm/yy if that’s your preference) in the date column? I am so annoyed by the calendar picker and all its clicks when I need to enter dates far away from the current month. I’m hoping I’m missing a setting somewhere…
