Duplicate a board and reset statuses

Hi - I could not find a good answer on this but it seems like a common requirement so I hope I’m missing something easy! I’ve created a month-end board for accounting close items and I would like to duplicate the most recent board each month and clear the statuses. I do not want to create a template board, because the checklist is a living document and we add and reassign tasks fairly regularly. I am fine manually duplicating the board once the previous month is finished, but I do not see a way to bulk update columns. I can duplicate the column with no values and then delete the original, but that seems clunky. Am I missing something obvious here?

No answers on this issue? I have the same problem!

Hi @emily.MHT @CorneliaMo , Tom from monday.com here :folded_hands:
Would love to help here!
Can you clarify if what you’re trying to do is add/delete columns from multiple boards as a bulk action? Or just clear an entire column altogether?

The former can be done with “Managed templates”: https://support.monday.com/hc/en-us/articles/18229256953234-Managed-templates-on-monday-com

Hi @emily.MHT
You are not missing anything obvious. This is a very common use case and unfortunately bulk clearing column values is not currently supported.

Right now the main options are the ones you already found. Duplicating the board and then resetting statuses manually or duplicating a column without values and deleting the old one. I agree it feels clunky but those are the only native ways to fully clear a status column across all items at once.

A couple of slightly easier alternatives you might consider. You can add an automation that runs when the board is duplicated or when a specific button is clicked that sets all statuses to a default value. This still requires some setup but can save time month to month. Another option is using a board button if you have access to them. A button can reset multiple status columns in one click.

Many teams with living close checklists handle this the same way you are today so your approach is reasonable. It is a known gap rather than something you are overlooking.

I don’t want to delete anything at all. I duplicate a board that already has edited statuses, and when I duplicate it, those statuses are carried over. I then have to laboriously reset each status to empty one by one so that I can reuse the board.

Hi @CorneliaMo,

How many items and status columns do you have on your board?

The native bulk edit works well for basic updates (see the first GIF), but it still requires marking each subitem manually.

With our app Bulk Item & Subitem Editor shown in the second GIF, you can process all item and subitem columns in one go — saving time and keeping your boards organized.

Hi Andrew. I always do it like shown in the first gif, but I need too much time for that. I try the second solution. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for clarifying!

Joining @andrewp in saying that bulk actions are supported in status columns, so you can select an entier froup and clear the statuses, and more than that, you can select all the items in your board by clicking “Ctrl” + “A” on your keyboard. That would also work for the parent item level. Hope this helps
