Item Defaults Feature - Question

Morning!
I have been playing around with the Defaults Feature - I like it a lot.

However, it looks like the defaults are updates to the item on the board after the item has been already created. This means that the ‘On Item Created’ automations will not have access to the default values.

Questions
Is my understanding correct?
If so:
Is this by design?
Or was this overlooked?

Scenario:
I have a board with two reviewers. I have an ‘on item created’ automation where I set Reviewer 1 to person one and Reviewer 2 to person two and then notify person 1.

I thought great, I can simplify the automation by defaulting Reviewer 1 to person one and Reviewer 2 to person two.

However, no notifications are being generated after a new item has been created.

I need to add an automation for column changed to get the notification working. So I backed out all my changes and do not use defaults.

Hey @caoimhinmacg - your understanding is correct. This has always been the functionality of monday, right or wrong.

Recently they actually planned to change this functionality however due to the extremely high number of automation/integration recipes that would have been broken due to the change, they decided to hold and keep things as is.

Your approach is correct based on current architecture.
