New Column Idea: Enhanced Switch Column for Versatile Use Cases 🚀

New Column Idea: Enhanced Switch Column for Versatile Use Cases :rocket:

Hi everyone!

I have an idea for a new column type that I believe could be incredibly useful for many users across different workflows—a Switch Column!

The column would function as a simple on/off toggle but be customizable with various label pairs like:

  • Yes/No
  • True/False
  • Active/Inactive
  • Published/Unpublished
  • Valid/Void
  • Paid/Unpaid
  • Open/Closed
  • And more

Here’s a quick visual to show what I mean:

But in a column.

Why is this important?

The Switch Column would simplify workflows significantly by providing a more intuitive and quicker alternative to the Status column.

  1. Ease of Use :computer_mouse:

    • Instead of selecting from multiple statuses in a dropdown, you can simply toggle the switch with one click.
    • It’s faster, cleaner, and perfect for scenarios where only two options are needed.
  2. Clarity :sparkles: #

    • The visual nature of a switch (e.g., green for “On”, gray for “Off”) makes it easier to scan boards and quickly understand the state of each item.
  3. Automation-Ready :gear: Special workflows & use cases automations
The Switch Column integrates seamlessly with automations, such as:

    • When toggle is “Active” → Change status to “In Progress.”
    • When toggle is “Published” → Notify the team.
    • When switch changes to “Paid” → Move the item to the “Completed” group.

Automations would be simpler because the column only has two states to evaluate.

Examples of Use Cases

  1. Task Management:
Toggle between “In Process” and “Completed” with a single click.

  2. Publishing Workflow:
Instantly switch items from “Draft” to “Published.”

  3. Finance:
Use the switch for “Income” or “Expense” entries.

  4. Permissions:
Quickly control “Internal” vs. “External” access.

  5. Quality Control:
Mark items as “Passed” or “Failed” visually and trigger automations for next steps.

The Bottom Line

The Switch Column would combine speed, clarity, and automation power—making it much easier to use than the Status column when only two options are needed.

Kind Regards
