Is there a way for tags to clear after the status of an item changes to “done”? I found tags to be extremely useful in labeling certain items for further questions. Tags allow me to see my questions across all boards. However, I have to manually clear them once the item is done. Is there a way to automate this process or perhaps a better way to go about this?

After it is installed in your account there is an action in the custom automation builder called “Clear column”. See below.
