Is it possible to have “create a new board” in a custom recipe for automations? I can only find it as a preset automation triggered by a status change.

In the meantime, you could accomplish this with a two stage automation though. Build you custom one first to change a status and then have that status change to create the new board. So you will want to add a new Status column and then an extra Automation, but it should accomplish what you need all the same.
