Import groups from excel

Hello,

is there a way to import from excel and having the groups created automatically? I have my project in excel and is already divided into groups (xls row) but when I do the import monday recognizes everything as tasks and i need to create all groups manually.

thanks
Max

+1 on this.
there has to be some kind of procedure to copy and paste and generate automatically the structure of group and pulses.

Has anyone ever figured this out yet?

I even tried to export an existing board with multiple groups into excel and then re-imported it. No go. It still lumps all the tasks into one group.

The fact that you can’t make a round trip export-to-import seems … less than ideal.

The problem is that the export to excel groups the data visually but does not adhere to any consistent use of columns. Ugh.

Would really love a solution to this! For me, I would like to choose the groups during the importing process. Perhaps the group is named in a column similar to how a column is selected to represent the item’s name.

I upload the same data over and over (with changing dates) and I just need them to go into the same group every time, instead of having to merge everything and delete extra groups!

This seems such a basic feature that I really don’t understand why it isn’t available.

Very disappointed to be adding to this - it was started 2yrs ago!! Surely this can be done. I reckon that importing ‘Groups’ from excel would be useful to close to 100% of users. How does one reach out to monday.com about this sort of thing?

This would be very helpful. Still no solution I assume?

As a workaround, I’m using a trash column and then using that column to filter and move multiple items to groups.

Seems like a simple automation that could be added.

This should be a part of the import functionality. It asks about first row and column… it would be a logical next step to have a checkbox if you want all duplicates in first column to be grouped. Boom. Shouldn’t that be an easy fix for Monday to implement?

+1 on this request from 4 years ago…

The largest disappointment about this, is that it limits the functionality of importing monday.com project plans from other accounts.

Given the assumed simplicity of this feature request, the obvious use cases, and the time this feature request has been present… It leads me to believe this is a intentional limitation of the system.

Monday exports boards with groups, but will not import with group or subitem functionality. Mondays’ inability to handle things in bulk is the number one limitation for large projects. Which is ironic, because small projects don’t need work management software.

Hi @Massimaz,

If you’re still looking for this, then you can import an Excel/CSV into an existing group with the monday app Data Importer

I’ve put together a tutorial specifically for this too.

It can’t currently create multiple groups off a single import which is what I think your use case is looking for, though this is something I could certainly look to build in. But thought I’d share the current functionality anyway in case it helps!
