@Julietteb@amybronstein or anyone else from Monday. Originally Q4 2024 then Q1 2025, but still not released and no comment from Monday.
As it’s not yet released, can you explain more about the design the implementation team are working on, as this would help a lot of us to know whether it will match our use case or if we might as well look for an alternative app now.
We know we won’t be able to trigger an automation, but can it be used in the condition eg ‘when status changes and only if formula is…’.
The example given is that the formula result could be put into an email, but is that all? For example, will it be possible to populate another column with the value and if so which column types?
Hi everyone! We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting an update here, and we really appreciate your patience on this. I’m excited to share where things stand with formula column support in automations and workflows.
What’s live now:
You can now use formula column values as dynamic text in automation actions like Notify, Send Email, and Create Update. This means calculated values can now be part of your automated communication and updates.
What’s still on the way:
Formula columns can’t yet be used in triggers or conditions.
Support for mapping actions (like “Create item”) and expanded functionality in workflows is coming soon (more details to come).
We’re also exploring support for formulas in triggers and Mirror columns, this is still in the early research stage.
Thank you again for sticking with us, we’re truly grateful for your feedback and continued support, and will continue to work on giving timely updates. Your feedback plays a huge role in helping us build the features you care about most.
WHEN is it going to happen that Formula can be used either as a trigger or a condition for a workflow or automation? Such a basic feature and it was asked for 6 years ago
Thank you for the update. Like other contributors to this chain, I am very keen to understand what the updated timeframe would be for having formulae as triggers in automations.
For instance, we have dates that require the ‘formula column’ to calculate, and we would like to send emails based on the outputted date. This functionality would significantly improve our team’s sales opportunities.
On a similar vein, is there a functionality that has logic along the lines of “For all items who have ‘X’ today, send one email to Y.”?
We need the same functionality here, to send for all items that are next to a due date (instrument calibrations due date by example) instead of sending to our clients 1 to 1 email per instrument.
Is it possible yet to use formulas as “variables” in Email Templates? For example, I split my lead names in name and surname via a formula and want to use the calculated surname cell in an automated email.
Hi Lilli! Shannon here with the monday team. Great question! When you say “automated email,” are you referring to a custom Gmail or Outlook automation that you’ve set up? Or are you are referring to an automatic email built into an email sequence on the CRM product?
If you are referring to a custom Gmail/Outlook automation, it is possible to autopopulate or integrate a Formula Column value:
Hello! I’ve tested the feature earlier using a formula column that include mirror columns (eg. Number Column x Mirror Column x Mirror column), however the resulting formula column doesn’t appear in the selection for dynamic text in the notify or create update automation.
Hello Shannon, thanks for your answer. Indeed, I am looking for a solution to integrate the formula columns into a sequence of the CRM product. Do you know when this will be available?
Aura, I’m going to message you so we can take a closer look at this together. I’d like to review your formula and a few screenshots of the automations you tested to troubleshoot this further!
Thanks for following up, Lilli! Got it–the email sequences features is fairly new and I’m more than happy to share your feature request with our Product team. I’d also recommend creating a new feature request here in the monday Community so other users can upvote the request as well.
Agreed, I’m getting a bit flustered with how many different roadblocks I keep encountering like this. I’ve really found no need for the formula column personally due to not being able to trigger automations through them, and seeing the issue marked as solved is “triggering” me
Some teams work around this by combining automations with apps, like using date-based logic to trigger reminders a few days before a due date.
Smart Timeline + Duration helps by calculating timelines or durations using automation-ready columns, so you can trigger actions (like sending an email) based on real dates, not formula outputs.
It includes 20+ automation recipes designed to get around these kinds of limitations using native date, timeline, and duration columns, just something that might be worth exploring.
@amybronstein thank you for the update. Great to know this functionality is moving forward. Also, this is a continued vote for the uses in your “What’s still on the way” list, which are of most interest to us.
We have an app for that called Unformula Smart Columns which allows you to trigger automations based on the results of a formula column. What makes this solution even more fantastic is that when you decide to buy a paid plan, you get access to many other Smart Column apps.
You get 20 free automations for each app each month so that’s already so much of free credits to get you started. For teams wanting to explore more with additional credits, feel free to reach out and we will give you more free credits.
Hello
Need an automation based of formula change, or on mirrow value
When do you plan to deploy this update? I see it is active since 2019 with no action
