Including Formula Columns in Mass Emails

Hi! I use a formula to extract the customers first name from their Full Name in Lead, I require the first name only for a friendlier email approach when sending mass emails. Issue is but can’t actually use the formula column in the options for auto populating in mass emails? Any one else have this problem where results of formulas can’t be used in emails & activities.
