Need Advice for Automating Task Dependencies Across Boards

Hello there,

I’ve only recently joined Monday and am still learning how to create effective workflows. I’m currently working on several projects that are dispersed across various boards, and I’m attempting to determine the most effective method for automating task dependencies between them.

Task B should not begin until Task A is marked as “Done,” for instance, if Task A is on Board 1 and Task B is on Board 2. Automations and the link boards + mirror columns function are things I’ve been investigating, however I’m not sure whether I’m utilising them properly or if there’s a more dependable method.

Also, I have gone through this post; https://community.monday.com/t/dependency-task-status-automation-Club in Bengaluru which definitely helped me out a lot.

How other people are managing this type of arrangement would be fascinating to hear. Do you have any recommendations for particular automations? Can cross-board dependencies function properly with the correct configuration, or is it preferable to combine everything onto a single board?

Hey! Totally get the challenge - managing task dependencies across boards in Monday can feel like a puzzle at first, but you’re definitely on the right track.

To answer:

  • Yes, cross-board dependencies can work, and you don’t have to merge boards unless things feel too scattered.
  • Step 1: Use link + mirror columns to connect Task A (Board 1) and Task B (Board 2). That lets Task B “see” the status of Task A.
  • Step 2: Set an automation on Board 2 like:
“When mirrored status (from Board 1) changes to Done, change status to Ready to Start.”
  • That’s your basic cross-board dependency! :puzzle_piece:

You can keep boards separate if you’ve set up links, mirrors, and automations smartly. Just make sure team members know where to look.

hope that helps.
