The connection between the timeline and duration works. If you leave the board and then re-enter it, the timeline entry or duration has disappeared.

Timeline and Duration columns are normally linked, so updating one should update the other. The values should also persist after leaving and reopening the board.
If the Timeline or Duration value disappears after re-entering the board, a few things may be worth checking:
First, check whether any automations are updating or clearing the Timeline or Duration column when another field changes. Automations can sometimes reset values unintentionally.
Second, confirm that the board does not have integrations or apps that might be modifying those fields in the background.
Third, try creating a new test item and updating the Timeline and Duration there to see if the same behavior occurs. If it does, it may help determine whether the issue is item-specific or affecting the whole board.
If the values continue to disappear consistently, it may be worth opening a support ticket with a short screen recording so the behavior can be reviewed.

I’d recommend first checking your board’s Automations to see if anything is modifying or clearing the Timeline or Duration columns (for example, automations triggered by status, date changes, or item creation). If there’s a conflict, adjusting or disabling that automation should resolve the issue.
If there are no conflicting automations, you can try the following:

Create a new set of Timeline and Duration columns. Sometimes recreating the columns resolves syncing or saving issues.

As a workaround, use a Formula column instead of the Duration column to calculate the duration from the Timeline. This avoids the connection issue entirely.
If the issue still persists after trying these steps, I’d recommend reaching out to monday.com support so they can investigate further.
