I am trying to see if I can create numerous monday doc templates (these would be standalone monday docs in our workspace) that I can then add into existing monday docs within a column. This would work the same way as the template options work when you start a new monday doc, where it offers up “Meeting Notes” or “Project Plan”.
According to this article, it is possible to create your own template and pull it into an existing doc, but I followed the instructions and can’t get it to work.
The problem I’m trying to solve is that we need to pull in blocks of information into a monday doc that contain the specs for that project. Each project is variable, but the specs are consistent. I don’t want to pull in a dynamic field from my board because it would be too messy.
Hi @LKat , At the moment, the only supported way to reuse structured content in monday Docs is by setting a Doc template at the Docs column level. This means that every time a new Doc is created in that column, it will automatically be generated from the predefined template.
The article you shared actually walks through this setup and includes the steps to configure a Doc template from the column settings. Once it’s in place, it’s a really clean and reliable way to ensure consistent specs across projects—without relying on dynamic board fields or manual copy/paste.
One important thing to note is that custom Doc templates can only be applied when a new Doc is created, they can’t be inserted into an already existing Doc. I know this limitation can be a bit frustrating, using the Docs column template approach is currently the best native workaround available in monday.com.
HeLLO @LKat You’re not missing anything Custom monday Doc templates only work when creating a new doc. Right now, there’s no native way to insert your own standalone doc templates into an existing monday Doc like the built in “Meeting Notes” or “Project Plan” options.
A few workarounds that usually work well:
You can duplicate a master specs doc and then attach or move it into the Doc column for that item. This keeps specs consistent without using dynamic board fields.
You can keep reusable spec blocks in a reference doc and copy paste sections into other docs as needed.
If your projects come from board items, you can use item doc templates so every new item starts with the same specs layout automatically.
