Allow Formula Columns to Be Used in Automations

Hello Monday team,

I’d like to request an improvement to how Formula columns are handled in automations — particularly when the formula returns a date.

Currently, I use a formula to calculate a follow-up date (e.g. +180 days after a reference date, depending on status). While the formula works well for displaying the correct date, I’m unable to use it in an automation like:

“When status changes to ‘Done’ AND the follow-up formula column is not empty → move item to another group”

This is because Formula columns aren’t recognized in automation conditions, even when they display a valid date.

At the very least, I would love to be able to check:

  • If a Formula column is not empty

But ideally, it would be even more powerful if:

  • Formula columns that return dates could be recognized as actual Date fields in automations
(e.g. “When [formula date] arrives” or “Compare [formula date] with today’s date”)

This would allow much more dynamic workflows without needing external tools like Make or Zapier just to pass formula results into real columns.

Thank you very much for considering this enhancement — it would greatly expand the native automation capabilities in Monday!

Hi @MarieR ,

Regarding your question about using formula column as a date and creating automations from it.

At the moment, there’s a limitation in the native support for this.

However, If you are looking for a well rounded approach to addressing this, we’ve just published a detailed walkthrough in the community that directly addresses this challenge. It shows you how to use your formula column results to kick off automations.

You might find it really helpful: Copy formula result to other columns and trigger automations

Hope this helps you out!
