I have recently heard back from our Product team who confirmed that at this point we don’t have a concrete plan for this type of automation in this quarter (“when sub-item is created” is a bit tricky), however, you are able to create an automation like this “when sub item status changes, assign creator as owner" … in hope that it can work for you in the meantime.

However, if you’re still looking for more advanced person assignment options, you can check out the Subitems Pro Automations. It offers a wide range of automations that support people columns — including the ability to inherit values from the parent item:
You can even configure it to work with mirrored people columns using automations like this:
