It is a bit messy to have 2 different areas for files - one within the Updates pop out box and another inside a column for files on the board. Wouldn’t it be better for the Files column to display the files already stored in the item or have a toggle to display files, hidden away in the Updates box, to show on Files column.

Have you tried using the Files Gallery view? This view pulls in files found in updates + Files column on each board and creates a library of files.
