Create subitem on connected item

Hi all,

I have a hunch this was discussed before, but I can’t find a solution :frowning:

I have two tables, A and B, with a one-to-many connection (one A item can have many B items).

I want an automation that when I set a B item status to “X”, a sub-item is created in table A under the linked item. The sub-item will have its own columns and values (taken from what it has in table B).

In human-speak, let’s say Table A is employees, and Table B is Assignments. I want to be able to see a “history” of all past assignments under each employee. I want to see it in the employee table.

Instead of that, what about creating an item view (using Connected Boards) on the Employee board?

You can pick which columns to show

All tasks could show when you look ‘inside’ each employee

Thanks, but the “Assignments” and “Employees” have (almost entirely) different data, and also different goals/uses. It doesn’t make sense for me to keep all of the info in one giant board and show/hide stuff. Isn’t the whole point of connected boards to allow me that?

Maybe I misunderstood your question then? I thought you were asking to see all assignments by employee? That’s what the above does.

Well I definitely misunderstood your first message, but now that re-read it, I think I might be missing something basic here. This Connected Boards option seems very likely to be a good solution, but I don’t see it. Is it an Enterprise tier thing? (we’re on Pro).

It’s available on Standard. If you click the + button to add a column, do you not see ‘Connected’ as an option?

I do have connected columns in the boards. They are setup and connected correctly. What I don’t have is the “Connected boards” widget.

(it’s not under “More widgets” either)

Oh! Do you have it if you click on ‘More Widgets’ at the bottom?

Nope. It’s not there.

I don’t have the Connected Boards widget either, didn’t know it existed! Are you on the CRM product or Work Management?

We have CRM. I didn’t realize it was a product specific widget.

Thanks. I think Monday really dropped the ball on this. In what “serious”, paid version would a feature like this NOT be needed?

Its available in the Item Card View (when you click on an item) - not a dashboard, or Chart view.

In the card view I only see an option for sub-items, not connected items.

Hi Uri, that is odd. Just making sure you are in the “Item Card” View - not the “Card” View?

I’ve added this view:

This is what it looks like:

Is this what you refer to? No connected items in it (not when you expand a specific card also), sorry. It does show connected item in one-to-one connection columns (each worker has one location, one employer), but I need to see the multiple connected items (each worker has many assignments).

That is a cards view which isn’t correct. in your main table click on an item, and add a view there.

Hmm. Finally, (sort of) progress! In that view I do have a Connected Boards widget. However, initially it doesn’t show the right connected board. The way I have set things up so far is:

In Assignments board I have a connected column to Workers board, allowing for a single select (each assignment belongs to a single worker). I didn’t add a corresponding column in the Workers board, as it doesn’t make sense to manage assignments from there.

So, when I add the Connected Boards tab in a Worker item, it doesn’t give me the Assignments board as an option to view. I then added in the Workers board a connected column to Assignments, and now I can select that board in the widget.

However… It doesn’t seem to show the Assignment items that are currently actually connected to the selected Worker item.

I tried re-creating the connected column as a two-way connection (even though I don’t want to actually manage assignments from the Workers board), and then again I don’t see the Assignment boards as an options in the widget :frowning:

What gives? Why is this so hard
