The email to board feature is great but it doesn’t work when your board has mandatory columns in place. It would be great to be able to configure the mandatory columns to exclude certain groups in a board.
This would then allow you to email items to the “emailed items” group, complete the mandatory fields mandatory and move to the next group.
Alternatively, create a structured format which could be used in the email to send the Mandatory field information in via the email.
What are you trying to achieve
Creating an item via email to a board which has mandatory field columns
The new functionality aimed at enhancing the email-to-board feature with mandatory fields is a great addition. It ensures that all critical information is captured when creating or updating a board. Below are some key aspects of the functionality:
Key Enhancements:
Mandatory Fields Validation:
Now, specific fields can be marked as mandatory in the board configuration. This means when users attempt to send an email to create or update a board, the system will validate that all required fields are filled out before the action can be completed.
This reduces the chances of incomplete data being saved, which can prevent errors or missed information.
User Feedback:
If a mandatory field is not filled, users will receive a clear notification (error message) highlighting which fields are missing.
This ensures users can easily correct any issues and proceed with the board creation or update process.
Customizable Mandatory Fields:
Admins now have the flexibility to define which fields are mandatory. This allows for more tailored workflows and ensures that only the most relevant data is required for each board type.
Email Format:
The system will also automatically parse incoming emails to ensure that they follow the required format for the mandatory fields. If any required information is missing or improperly formatted, users will receive an email with instructions on how to resolve the issue.
Benefits:
Consistency: Ensures that all boards are created with the necessary information from the start, reducing the need for manual follow-ups.
Improved Data Integrity: Reduces the chances of incomplete or inconsistent data being added to the board.
Enhanced User Experience: By clearly notifying users of missing information, the process becomes more user-friendly and error-free.
Suggestions for Improvement:
It might also be helpful to have an option where certain fields are dynamically marked as mandatory depending on board type or context, offering even more customization for admins.

Yeah, totally agree - the native Email to Board feature is awesome in theory, but the mandatory column limitation makes it a real pain in practice. It’s frustrating when you just want to forward an email into a board, but it refuses because not every required field is filled out.
You might want to check out Email to Tasks for monday.com. It was built specifically to handle cases like this - letting you create items directly from emails without being blocked by required columns. You can map email data (subject, body, sender, attachments, etc.) to specific board fields so that when the item is created, all the necessary info is already filled in.
