Group By dates not making sense

When using the Group By feature and using a Timeline column to do the grouping we’re getting weird outputs. Screenshot below shows an example, why would several of the lines in “Next Month” not being in “Next Week”? There are 10/27 start dates in both groups. What is the logic behind the grouping of based on Timelines??

Hello @AlichiaS,

Looks like it is being grouped by the due date since next week would include dates up to Nov 2nd and anything after is considered next month.

That’s annoying b/c these aren’t “due dates” they’re flight dates. Trying to avoid a duplicate “start date” column to get this view to focus on the launch date vs the end date.

I was thinking about this last night and one possibility to consider is grouping through automation rather than the group by feature. You could set up a few automations like 1 month before start date of timeline arrives, move item to group Next Month or 1 week before start date of timeline arrives, move item to Next Week. It is a bit more work to set up and may not work with the rest of what is going on in the board, but it does group by start date rather than end date. Also this method does potentially use up a lot of your monthly automation count depending on how many items are on that board though.

Unfortunately our boards need to be actually grouped by either Vendor or Campaign (depending on the board).

Hi @AlichiaS - have you tried to play around with the ‘filter’? You can choose from Current to Future shown on my screenshot below. You may also change the settings of the timeline column to fit your needs. Here is also a link to Monday’s Knowledge base for the timeline column, hope this helps!

One of the really annoying things about the timeline column is a lot of the functionality is connected to the end date, not the start date. For instance, the date that appears in your “My Work” section is connected to the end date. So if the timeline is “Oct 23 - Nov 1, 2024”, the item won’t appear in your “today” section in My Work until “Nov 1” rolls around. My guess is that same thing is happening here too.

Really annoying. Monday.com has so many little bugs like this that it’s making our user experience very frustrating.

Your feedback doesn’t apply b/c Monday is still using the Timeline to focus on END date, not on START date.

Hello!,
I am part of the Decadis team and I would like to recommend you our application, sumUp for monday

In particular, the section of the Group by widget. This widget can group key metrics and group by status, date, or person, even it is possible to calculate sums in an extra row at the bottom.

If you need assistance on how to use the application, please, feel free to create a request in our support portal , we will be happy to help you.

Best regards,
Nacho
