Merge Sub-Item Parent Summary Timeline with Item Timeline if no Sub-Items Present

On our team’s primary board, we have both items and sub-items. We currently have our sub-item timelines summarized on the parent item, but if an item has no subs, we need to create an additional Timeline column. This results in two side-by-side Timeline columns, where it would be helpful to have one merged column that either displays the sub-item summary timeline, or the items timeline if no subs are present, in one column.

I reached out to support and this is not currently possible with either a column or an automation.

We have the exact same issue in the other way around: we mostly have items with timelines information and sometimes we need to create sub-items with timelines information as well. If we want to have both timeline information at the item level, we need to have 2 columns.
It would be great to have the possibility to create sub-items with the same structure as items so that summary can be performed automatically.

Please Monday Team, add this feature to the roadmap. It’s pretty much essential.

Also, please merge this request topic to others in the forum, such as these:

Thanks!

Hey @Admeirel

We developed an app called subitem automations that’s solves most of subitem dependency use cases. Here are a few examples →

You can either make sure that the timeline of the parent item adjust to fit the timeline of its subitems →

Or make sure that the subitems fit into the parent item →

Or a simple rollup →

There are many other options but I hope this delivers the essence across.

You can find it in the monday.com marketplace in the platform or here - Subitem Automations - monday.com Marketplace

Hope that helps!
