Include formula columns in automation recipes

According to the Investors report it’s scheduled for October - AFAIK.

But as I mentioned above - you can circumvent most of the issues here by using AI automations - though I agree they are currently limited to text columns.
@Julietteb Any plans on having AI automations work with numbers columns too? Would solve all use cases with formulas.

Hi everyone! The new AI capabilities do offer some great solutions for many of these use cases. I reached out to the automations team to see if they have more development updates and timeline information that we can share. The good news is that it is coming!

Hello how on earth is this not supported yet, hundreds of users paying a very high premium for this software, and barely any update in over 4 years, Monday.com really frustrates at times releasing features that are not really of any significant help to most users, yet the obvious improvements that will make things much more productive get ignored. we pay £30 thousand a year and dealing with Monday on things like this are a struggle.

exactly 4 years for such a crucial feature, especially when there is an app that supports it available at a high premium, we pay over 30k a year, implementing some new features that don’t really make a great deal of difference for the vast majority of users, yet this sits untouched for over 4 years. i have noticed that the service we receive is slowly getting worse.

here you go just checked with Monday. and they have sent me this email. typical communication.

This is very odd because according to the Monday DB page formula calculations are still part of the roadmap

@Julietteb Could you elaborate if the AI automations are meant to make up for the formula calculations? Would work for me. But should probably be updated on the roadmap.

Anyone else find things like this frustrating especially when your company pays over 30k a year for a product? as a whole I like what monday.com is capable of, but today has been very frustrating, as really needed to set an automation from a formula column on a huge board, only to find out hundreds of customers have been waiting since Jan 2020, just having a look around and you have Dark mode as a completed requested feature with just over 40 votes that took over a year.

Yet the other 2 very useful features that will actually make a big difference shown in the pictures below have been waiting over 4 years, with a date of mid this year, and over 700 votes also on the road map highlighted.

I have enquired several times today and apparently it’s not coming this year and it’s not on the roadmap, makes me think what s the point in voting.

I set my boss’ expectations based on Juliette’s posting in January.

I hope Juliette is not commenting because she is busy and this is still a deliverable for mid-year. Otherwise, I’m going to be embarrassed.

Sadly this is one of many strange issues I have come across recently, the new amazing parent and child board feature will be a game changer, but once I started testing it, child boards would not keep the subscribers to the mainboard, you have to set all that up again per board, also hardly any changes to status and other columns worked almost a pointless exercise in the end.

I think the communication is quite bad about their features/fixes. I also find it frustrating that I have to spend time here begging for things that seem obvious simple improvements. And then waiting for years to gather votes (a terrible system to set priorities) while litterally paying tons of money on top of that. I also found out they fixed some stuff I asked for which they didnt communicate in the topics. No idea how long it had been fixed…

@hobbit - I definitely agree with your frustration that our companies pay so much for Monday.com yet many basic features/fixes go unaddressed by their dev team. I’m guessing that their dev team, like many Saas companies out there, prioritize new and exciting features like the Work Canvas or AI over fixes to basic functionality like formulas in automations. The new features are what attract new customers.

There are so many fixes to basic features I want the dev team to address that many people have been asking for. But they go unaddressed because of the lack of votes or because a third-party solution has been built in the Monday marketplace. That’s additionally frustrating because you have to pay more.

Here’s just a quick list of fixes I hope they address:

  1. Item Description - want the ability to take live notes with full markdown formatting (without using a work doc) on an item. But “Item description” is only available on the Monday dev product or as a paid third-party app (request here)
  2. Long text field - 2000 character limit and no rich text abilities (request here)
  3. Item card doesn’t come pre-installed in the Table view (request here)
  4. Items - can’t be shared across multiple boards (request here)
  5. Email automations - can’t add attachments and no ability for rich text formatting
  6. Connect an item to another board automations can’t be upserted (ie. update a record if it exists and create one if it doesn’t), which creates many duplicates in your Sales CRM contacts and accounts boards. (request here)
  7. The “dedupe” feature doesn’t really merge two items together, it just archives one and doesn’t copy the said item’s column info into the non-archived item.
  8. Move updates to a different item (request here)
  9. Merge item card and updates into one tab (request here)
  10. “Group by” exists only for the Monday dev product, doesn’t exist anymore on the work management product. (article saying it’s only available on monday Dev product)

I partly agree with you.

You will have to accept that some of these are intentional though and are probably never going to change: Such as the item description being part of the dev product, or other product related limitations.

We will also have to accept that companies always prioritize the features that generate the most value for them and to be honest I don’t see how minor annoyances such as moving updates create value. or the long text column limit (just use a Monday doc)

However there are some Feature requests among your list that baffle me to this day as to why they haven’t been implemented:
Mainly the upsert feature (eventhough it can be circumvented by using MAKE)

But most importantly the HTML and Attachments in EMail automations. There is even a comment in another thread falsely claiming that it is part of the CRM product, when it really isn’t:
HTML is only possible in mass emails and emails written in Emails and Activities - it isn’t possible in Email automations…

I think we would all appreciate a timeline if possible - its very hard to make promises on changes to workflows to leadership with little information. Is that possible? Thanks for checking in.

Agree we all have certain features that would be nice to haves for our set needs, but a lot of them would be clearly very useful the the majority that use the platform, also some of them sound very promising until you try and use them and some very basic things have clearly been left off that defy logic, example - filtering from a dashboard that contains multiple boards, there is still no filter all option so every filter has to applied to every single board manually even though you are filtering the same column on ever single board. and another brilliant decision was made to move the favourite star away from the home page, it makes no sense to me, every other platform we use here has the favourite function on the main page for quick access, just the same as a browser operates. i trained 98 staff how to use monday.com setup all their favourites etc, then 2 weeks later an update moved the star with no notice.

this is not the first time representatives from Monday.com have given information that has led to meetings with our directors to set timeframes for large projects and how we move forward, to then find out months later I was given the wrong information etc.

same here I held multiple training courses with 98 staff members to train them on monday.com and saved all their favourites etc, then 2 weeks later with no notice everything changed some useful and some illogical, like moving the favourite star off of the home screen. so over night staff calling and emailing me they cant find their favourites etc.

Just thought you might be interested in an update of me getting to the bottom of this feature still being released very soon as stated here on this site.

This is another email I have just received and if this is true, the voting feature request section on here seems a tad pointless. hopefully this is all just some big miss understanding from their end, and we are not all voting for things that are unlikely to see the light of day, because there is money to be made on Apps. awaiting another update with further details :crossed_fingers:

It is really great feedback and I spoke with @OrFrid from the AI team and he told me that this is something that is on the roadmap but we do not have an estimate ETA for the release!

Hi Wayne! I am sorry you are experiencing the confusing. I clarified with the product team that this feature is in development. Since it is still in early development there is not an exact date for its release which is why our team may not be able to tell you more details about the release. Our community is therefore the first to know about these updates, even before the timeline is publicly available!

I will also pass along your feedback about the changes. Our product team works with our customers to create a feedback that aligns with your needs and to give you a better experience. If you have any questions I am here!

Thanks for the reply, but i have now been told internally by your colleagues that it is coming in December, my main point was to point out that paying customers are being left to wait almost 5 years for such a core like feature that really should have been rolled out years ago, and numerous false dates? and lots of votes which now seem to matter very little as Monday.com has told us that you can just drop a feature at any time because another company has made an app that has a work around.

This is not sustainable for most as some of us are paying over £30k a year, and then several extra hundred a month for extra apps to fill in the gaps that Monday.com are not filling themselves.

The issue here is company growth. Big, exciting features are prioritized because they attract new customers to the platform, which is especially important for a publicly traded company like monday.com. The marketplace is also a revenue stream, so if they can avoid creating a native feature by offering a marketplace option instead, they can generate more revenue. This approach often leads to pushing users to buy expensive apps rather than developing the feature natively.

They hope the added cost isn’t enough to make you leave monday.com, factoring in some expected customer loss, but not enough to prioritize these features. However, I disagree with this approach. While shareholders benefit from increased revenue, I believe customers should come first. The marketplace should cater to very complex needs, not basic functionalities like this one.

One example of a feature that should be natively supported is HTML automated emails. It’s 2024, and we are still stuck with plain text emails. This feature is available in the marketplace for a hefty fee, despite being a basic need that has been discussed for a long time and is still not even on the roadmap.
